In this introductory message to the book of Lamentations, we learned of the complete devastation of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 587/6BC.

In the wake of the horror of this event, Jeremiah the prophet--whose ministry of calling Isreal to repentance was ignored--sat down and composed this grief-filled, tear-stained work of art known simply as "Lamentations."

We also learned three reasons why we need this book:

Because we need to remember the pain of the past "lest we forget."
Because we need to learn the language of lament ourselves.
Because we need to wrestle honestly with God in our own lives.
